Frangipani captures a special moment in time while I was fortunate to be with my family in Kenya over December ’20 between lockdowns, signifying the first bud of fresh growth. Frangipani sits pretty in many an urban Nairobi garden, ours included, and spotted along roadside verges. I watched daily with anticipation how with renewed vigour a bud would slowly and then suddenly burst open forming the most beautifully scented flower, a delicate blend of white and yellow petals quietly strong amongst the leafy foliage. For what felt like one simple moment, it left a significant mark, a magnetic pull of joy. It is this renewed sense of joy, vigour and splendour I pass on to you in this print.

The linocut print is made in the reduction technique. This is a method of block printing where each colour layer is taken from the same block, carving each layer and printing the next colour on top of the last. There are nine layers in total on this small yet mighty Frangipani print - one of which is two shades of green inked and rolled directly on the lino block in a monoprint technique, printed and then carved away for the next layer. I wanted to create a more fluid depth of tone by inking in this painterly way to indicate the subtle colour changes hinted at in the soft dusk light.

Intentional choices are made when selecting the surface block and paper; each to compliment the plant in its form, within its landscape. Frangipani is lovingly carved on Battleship grey lino, printed with oil based printmaking ink using an etching press. To reflect the soft yet strong, cotton-like texture of the flower, I chose to print on Fabriano paper.
